Howdy,
I have play sand in my 220 gal, and I am happy with it. Introduce trumpet snails to keep it well aerated. They will also eliminate any air bubbles. Fill the tank with some water before you pour in the sand, that way you reduce the formation of bubbles greatly. Simply remove the dirty water afterwards before you fill the tank completely. I did not wash my play sand, it came pre-washed.
