sand or no sand?

I agree with keeping a thin layer of sand and second johns request for pics.
 
wow thanks for all the replys everyone much appreciated i definetely will keep the sand in the tank. And i came to a conclusion that i think that the main reason that he is burying himself so much is because the guy i bought him from almost always kept the lights off, so he is probly not used to the lights in my tank. also when i come downstairs in the morning to turn the lights on in the tank he is very active and swimming around so it sounds like he has to just get used to the lights. and i will definetly post pics as soon as i can catch him coming out. thanks again everyone.
 
put the lights on a timer rays like routein
 
The longer he is in the system and becomes accustomed to his new environment then he will relax and become more active. With the sand he will do what is natural and sift through it looking for food.
