I've heard before that sand in a SA/CA tank leads to larger, more visible teeth because as they mouth sand, nothing happens. But when cichlids constantly move gravel, it must wear down their teeth? It all seems so, I have an ebjd in a tank with sand and he seems pretty teethy for his size ;). Logic would lead me to believe that this is true, but can any oneView attachment 833599View attachment 833600 confirm this?

This is an interesting thread, don't have any funds to add my 2cents but its worth reading others

Hmm I wonder if it is true. I've had convicts with gravel in the tank bite me. their teeth weren't really sharp but my firemouth pair witch had sand and did move it alot. Broke skin when it bite me. So I would say it is.

You know this is probably true when I had my dovii and he was in a 75 gallon grow out which had gravel he was in there till he was like 8 to 9 inches and his teeth weren't really noticeable then when I put him in a 220 it had sand and like 2 weeks later his teeth where hanging out of his mouth so he either grew into his teeth or him picking food off the sand was less rough on his teeth then the gravel was and his teeth didn't get broken down anymore
