i have been searching for the answer to this question but cant find an answer. its simple, if the fish dig and play in the sand bed, if they end up eating any or it passing through there gills, will it harm them in any way. im going out today to get sand but i just wanted to know if it hurts the fish in any way.

Usually it will not harm them, them may cough if they get sand in their gills but that's pretty much it.

hey thanks for the quick replys. im more excited about switching to sand than i was when i first got the tank. or one more thing, what about plecos, i have two that love the bottom.

lil bit of a bump, but i just got done adding sand. i had to use play sand because neither lowes, home depot, or wal mart had pool filter sand. but how long will it take for my water to start to clear up, it is just a lil bit cloudy.

That depends on your filtration.

I usually add a HOTmag or two to clear it up quicker.

Depends how well you rinsed it before putting it into the tank. I rinsed it a pound at a time, 5-7 rinses per batch. It cleared up in a day and a half, even with a crappy 115 gph HOB.

i feel stupid for asking, but what is a hotmag.

Hang On Tank Magnum 250.

the water actually cleared up in about three hours. i LOVE the look of the sand and doubt if i will ever use gravel again.
