Sand Question

I would DEFINITELY go with pool filter sand over that stuff. You can wash that bag for an hour and the tank will still be cloudy for a day of two and the grains are really small (easily stirred up, can end up damaging filtration, compacts and forms gas pockets easily). Pool filter sand is larger grained, doesn't compact, doesn't get stirred up much, and you can dump it in straight from the bag without much if any clouding

andyjs, if you rinse it enough you will not have any cloudiness or stray particles at all unless there's too much current or a playful inhabitant (same for pool sand). And anaerobic pockets are how denitrification works. It's safe, there's no boogeyman.

I use it all over the place. You will be rinsing while you stir for at least 15 bucket changes. If you fill a bucket halfway with the stuff out of the bag, you'll be washing away at least 1/3 of it as silt. But it's great stuff for deep sand beds, since you can rinse it less and leave lots of finer particles in there to compact and go anaerobic at sufficient depth. Looks so natural, too.

You use what exactly?

Worst experience in my life with sand.... It was the beach type sand... even then... it depends on what type of fish you keep.

I personally would not recommend fish like oscars, flowerhorns with sand...my FH digs so much, the water used to ALWAYS be cloudy... he used to dig sand, and his poo used to be trapped under it... was just bad... i replaced it with gravel...and its much better now :)

LMAO I agree 100% I love my DSB's (marine and fresh) never ever ever had a problem with them. However I highly doubt the OP will be putting in a 6"+ sand bed, so he should not have to worry about any of this.

GET POOL FILTER SAND i spent over an hour of washing sand for a 55 gallon fish tank that was filled up 1inch your gonna be on ur knees washing and repeating for hours get pool filter sand it would save you
so much time

If you don't mind washing it play sand is great, and I love the look, If you don't wash it well like me it will cloud the hell outta your tank for awhile, my pond was murky for about a week and a half since I didn't wash it well. But its cheap and looks good, there's just a little bit of work to it

dont use it (play sand) i got it cuz it looks natural but it clouds up all the time in my 40g, but in my 180 i have beach type sand (real sand) which is heavy grained and great looking, dont get pool filter sand unlesss you like an unnatural white color
