sand question

Im about to switch over my 50 gal to a oceanic 110 gal reef ready tank. The previous owner had live sand in it as a reef tank, but for the last month used it as a lake tank with bass in it. Can I still use this sand in my tank which will be a fish only sw tank. Should I rinse the sand? Also how do you clean the sand? Im use to using crushed coral. Seems like the sand would just go right up a syphon tube.

As long as copper had not been used you can use it. But remember that you will still need to use live sand and live rock for the bio filtration. If you use the sand rinse it well. Another thing the sand will turn live eventually if you mix live sand in with it. So then you wouldn't need to buy so much. Just make sure you use enough live rock and you should be good to go! Oh the reason for the copper statement was if you wanted to put corals or inverts IE anems and snails. Copper will kill them.

Rinse it in tap water and maybe just add some new live sand to it?

Yes, rinse it very well with tap water. Then spread it out on something outside in the sun to dry. You could add a bag of live sand if you want or just get live rock. Live sand is basically sand with some bacteria.
