Sand sifting freshwater fish, any ideas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Petsmart is selling "surinamensis" They are probably abalios or altifrons which might work in your tank. You might want to grow them out first as they sell them small. Could take a while though, they are VERY slow growers.

Would they be fine growing out of a 55 with community fish? Such as angels and balas
And when you say "very slow growers", what kind of a growth rate would we be looking at?

I bought three jurupari today from an exotic fish store and they are 2.5" and are exactly what I needed. Although I couldn't put them in the 55 grow-out tank because the arowana tried to eat one aswell as the Oscar.

Thanks for all the help though everyone

Good Luck!

Sorry I couldn't get back to you though on the post before you got the jurupari's.

Some people's geos grow two inches from being 3 inches in about 9 months.

When I first got into fish, I noticed that comet goldfish would constantly suck in gravel and spit it out. Now, I have a larger tank and I've kept my friend's koi in them when he's re-arranging his pond and they also suck in gravel, The Doctor

I do not understand how rays are sold in shops here if they are illegal. (TX). Besides, mixing rays with annoying fish like oscars would only stress the ray.

Growth rate is about a 1/4 of an inch per month, painfully slow.

Hm they shouldn't be sold in elpaso. Or any other city in Texas. They're just lucky Texas parks and wildlife haven't caught them yet

And only 1/4" a month? That's a little too slow
