sand substrate and a FX5?

I use white riversand from the fish shop...
I have an FX5 and the intake is about 10cm above the sand only...
when i change the FX5 filter, theres maybe a tablespoon or two's worth of sand in it... and my water is clean, it pretty much sucks it all up ;)

I don't like the thought of putting the prefilter on the inlet b/c I feel it defeats the purpose of having all that mechanical filtaration inside a FX5. I think ill just have to set the inlet higher then normal
