Use a sponge prefilter on your intake. Cichlids will frequently carry a mouthful of sand over to the intake and spit it directly in just to piss you off.
yeah if your hearing this like wtf?? its true i had this with a frontosa but i doubt it was just to piss me off

Just keep the intakes further off the bottom. I find it too much of a pain to keep a prefilter clean. I tried the prefilter sponge on the AC110 but it clogged up too fast. I don't worry about my Eheims collecting sand as it never reaches the pump.

yehp ive been running sand for a while now and my filters get clogged with sand now and again, prefilter sponge is a good idea. I have more of a problem with bichirs and their tail whipping than cichlid with their sand spitting

Thanks for all the info. Yes these are HOB I am referring to. I'm using 2 Aquaclear 110's. I think I will use a pre-filter on the intake tubes. I have sand in my marine tank and have both a HOB and a canister on it, but none of the fish in there dig into the sand (the only area they could do that is at the front of the tank due to the live rock).

I've had AC's in the past. What I did was basically cut the foam insert that you would buy for whatever size AC you have in half. Then with a sharp exacto knife bore out a hole big enough to slide the sponge over the intake. Cheap and custom fitted for your filter all in one. I did this when I has a SA tank because they were always so messy.

I do have an extra foam filter for the AC's. I will try using it for prefilters.
Here is a trick for getting a perfect hole in the foam...

Put the foam in a plastic container and fill with water...put it in your freezer till it is rock hard...drill the hole a 1/4"-3/8" SMALLER that your intake screen,
defrost under warm water and there you have it...Foam with perfect hole...
