I'd like to create "rolling hills" so to speak, in my 75g planted tank I'm putting together. But finding sand has been difficult, everyone has live sand. I found sugar sized aragonite at a store for $34.99 for 30lbs. And plain white sand for 5.99 for 5lbs. I would like white white, not off white. Suggestions on what stores or what kind of stores would have this? And how many pounds i'd need to have full bottom cover with a few elevated hills?

well the play sand i got from home depot was $4 for 40 pounds and it is white with a few black grains in it which looks pretty good

I definitely concur. Even if you build them yourself, they will be nice enough to redecorate.

If true aquarium sand is cost prohibitive, try pool filter sand. It is much cheaper than aquarium sand and far superior to play sand. Play sand is cheapest, but I would avoid it at all costs. I know there are some people that like it, but 99% of the people I know that tried it hated it.

Play sand looks more tan than it does white so it's not what the OP is looking for. Although I personally think it's awesome. The initial rinse sucks but do it once and it stays good forever. PFS would probably have more of a white color.

lowes play sand is white white...i mixed it with some off white sand in my 75 gallon and still turned out almost too white...its on sale right now for like $3 for 40 lbs

The sugar sized sand is pretty white. I have it in one of my tanks and I think it looks whiter under aquarium lighting than it does in the bag

Caribsea Moonlit Sand. Its very fine grained

here's what it looks like in my tank:

Spare your self the back breaking work of play sand. IT SUCKS! It's great once you get it into the tank, but a PINTA to rinse it. You'll spend a decade trying to clean it and realise that atleast 50% of the sand has washed away.

With that in mind it's really not cheaper than pool filter sand... I bought some at a local hardware store that is the exact color of limestone that was 10 dollars for 50 pounds. It didn't take any washing just drop it in and smooth it out...
