sand substrate question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i had intended to use pool filter sand. however, when i went to menards to get it i was very put off by the brown color and gritty texture of the pool filter sand that they stocked. i don't know of any pool equipment stores around here. they did, however, have a very nice looking white play sand so i went with it. the sand is already in there so im going to do whatever i can to make it work. i only really have one fish that swims around actively near the bottom so im not sure if him stirring up the water and making cloudy is going to be an issue once everything settles. the plan for today is to do multiple half water changes while playing in the sand. my fish are in a 15 gal tank right now and i would really like to get them back into their home...i will try the nylon over the filter method, i have already cut two inches out of the tube.

I use silica sand on both my tanks, 125 & 150, I washed it prior to putting into the tank but it still took about 2 weeks for the water to become crystal clear. I bought the sand at a place that sells pools and hot tubs, it was really cheap, $5 for a 75 lb bag.

Pfs is very east to maintain if cleaned well, stick the handle of a net in the tank once a month and mix to avoid methane.

I do think other sand is better but i know most aqueon quietflow power filters do help because the impeller is in the intake, which also helps with the noise, but youll still have to clean out the intake aton or itll jam up and break
