How have you been cleaning the tank?
Useing a siphon or python it one of the most important fishkeeping skill, right up there with opening the food package;)

I stir up things while my fish hide, then scoop them out (along with dirty water) with a bucket. I've been doing it for 3 months.

All you have to do is get some hose, cut it to the length you need, have that and a reasonably sized bucket for when your cleaning your tank. All you do is put one end in the water, one end in the bucket, suck on the end in the bucket to start the siphon. Run the other end through and over your substrate, its very simple and doesnt take much practice :)

Sand is very easy to clean, as all the poop and other waste sits on top of it. So you just run the siphon over the top of the sand, just high enough to not suck up the sand. Give it a go, your tank will be a much better environment for your fish if you vac it every week when you do your waterchanges.

So I put my mouth on one end and suck on it, then put it in the water and it will suck up water and debris? Sounds good.

I'll check out vacuums this weekend. I just remember having to shake the thing up and down to get the suction going. Pain in the... neck...

its worth every penny, if i didnt have a python, id probably stop keeping fish. it makes it so much easier to maintain a tank

A 1 liter coke bottle with a hole in the cap and the bottom cut off.
Place a tube in the hole and make sure its a tight fit and VIOLA! you have a vaccum.
BTW i never shake my vaccum up and down. I suck on one end to get the siphon started then i stick the other end of the hose out the window.

So I just suck on it with my mouth and it will automatically suction? I hate shaking, also.
