Sand vs gravel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive used sand and gravel. I like the gravel alot better. It doesnt show every peice of poop, it doesnt fog up your tank, get stuck in your impeller or get blown up if you have large fish swimming. I used silica sand it was ok but I had all the above problems. So I switched back to gravel, gravel is no big deal if you have a battery powerd vacume. I do water changes once a week and use the Ehiem cordless fish tank vaccume once a week.

Hello; Having used both I have no sand in any of my setups currently. I like sand for some special setups such as a breeding tank for some types of fish.
For display tanks the gravel has generally worked out better for me. The sand can be made to work but gravel seems to present fewer problems over time especially in a rooted plant display tank.

Sand is better. In my opinion. Sand is way cleaner! Also sand is more natural for the fish.

Easier to clean and looks better. One thing I hate the most with gravel is stirring it and your pristine looking tank is now cloudy with debris.

One big problem with sand is making sure its heavy, so it doesn't stir up easy. One thing I hated was replacing a propeller because my fish would spit sand into the filter.

Is the sand you can buy at most chain pet stores such as the 'african cichlid mix' too fine? I've tried the white sand before and it was a nightmare, way too fine and if I were to skim the surface with a gravel vac it would suck up half the sand. I may go with pool sand...
