Tons of threads on this subject so have good search but IMO dont buy the cheapest sand you find. Always buy aquarium specific sand or river sand as the grain size is picked so that it doesnt compact down and cause gas pockets to build up.

I've been using Kiln Dried sand from B&Q for about 4 months now. A good rinse and it's absolutely fine for aquariums.... It's about £2 -£3 for a bag. 20-25 kilos i think. My convicts love sifting the sand and spitting it out looking for food. Good for nest pit building too!

I use aragonite...it has good buffering capabilities. I sprinkle in some moon sand to give it a salt and pepper kind of look, so it is not too pale.

I think I have plenty of filtration to do away with the UGF. I have a Magnum 350 filled with ceramic rings and it feeds a pair of bio-wheels. I also have a Whisper 60. Won't that hold it for awhile. I am going to add a sump when I get it finished. I may wait until it's done to change it out.

Would like to see pics of your sand you guys have if possible?

i reccommend you use only one inch depht of sand, wash it first completely with tap water, and pass a magnet over it to catch any metals debris

Pool filter sand works great.
