foam, sponge, nylon stocking...

Whoaaaa......... there we go with the common sense I'm lacking. The nylon stocking sounds perfect, guess I could even find something black. Any drawbacks to using one though. I mean will it now strain any debris that really should be passing through the filter?

Here's an idea if you feel creative...try drilling a hole into the bottom of the driftwood with intakes on either side of it, and mount it over the out take. It will look decorative and you won't be able to see the infrastructure.

yeah most likely i've seen people make funnels to put around them that or a longer intake

If you go with the nylon, becarful because as the water is passing through it will catch other debris in the nylon and clog your filtration. Can slow it down within a week.

you could use PVC piping and relocate your intake further in the back of the tank and higher? maybe?
