I used the regular, washed, screened playsand from the Home Depot. It did not say "not for aquarium use", though. Look around on their shelves and you'll find bags w/o that note.
Keep in mind that playsand is good for planted tanks, but if you have digging fish, go for pool filter sand (indoctrinated by rallysman...)
- it comtains less clay

was wondering for pool filter sand, do you just go to any pool supply store and ask them for it. are there different type of sand used?
I think each Home Depot and Lowes has a different section of sands.. I got my 'white' silica sand at Lowe's for $6/bag.. Each bag was 50 lbs.

i guess i didnt make myself clearer when reading back my questions. I was wondering if there are different types of pool filter sand? can i just walk in to a pool supply store and ask for pool filter sand and whatever type they give me is okay to use in aquarium or are there different types where i have to making sure about getting a particular type of pool filter sand.

That's what I did and was satisfied with the sand I got. The pool filter sand have bigger grains than the play sand at Home depot. It won't cloud your tank even if you have a hang on top type of filter. The Home depot play sand tends to cloud up tanks. If you have fish that like to dig up the substrate you will have a cloudy tank with the play sand.
