what brand of sand do you guys find needs the least amount of rinsing? I normally use pool filter sand, but don't have the means to rinse it now that I live in a city. thanks

surprisingly I have not had much of an issue with my hob or canisters with sand. Java moss on the other hand is a completely different story.

I used the petco brand black sand and it was awesome. Most of it sunk right away. What ever didn't sink floated to the top and sunk once a stirred the water a little. Almost instamtly I had clear water. I also used Marineland (I think) does the same thing.

i have the petco sand in my 125g. I always felt like I was rinsing a lot of it away. Also compared to the pool filter sand I find more of it gets sucked up during water changes. Do you find that?

also those of you that live in apartments and don't have a hose how do you rinse your sand before using it? I don't want to wash sand down my drain.

silica sand, a very fine grained white sand, very little rinsing, get it at pool store, specify silca sand, it comes in 75lb bags and costs around $5

Petco sand is great, sometimes hardware stores have silica that is for sand blasting, grade 30 is real fine and looks great. You can take some fine media filter padding and attach it around the intake of your HOB filter and it will help clean up the clouding if you don't rinse it (if there are no fish in the tank). Just be sure to cover all the area around and below the intake tube. Otherwise you could take a trip to the park or somewhere with a water source and rinse it out there. Rinsing out smaller portions at a time works better at removing the "dust" and is worth it than being in a hurry.
