I have a question for you all. Is it possible for me to get sand as a substrate for my tank even though my filter comes up through the bottom? Here are a couple pics of it. It sucks in through the top of that white pipe, and comes back out into the tank under the gravel at the base of the pipe. Since the outake is at the base, and the intake is probably 8-10" up from the bottom, can i use sand as a substrate? I'm tired of the gravel I have now lol

i think that would be difficult since the water returns from the bottom? it would constantly be pushing sand everywhere.. maybe extend the return water pipe up like your intake.

Yea, unfortunately, i'd say it wont work........even on my tanks with HOB filters when my fish stir the sand up you can hear the filters picking it up..........especially if you have active fish, your filters would be clogged in no time...........

Maybe with a heavier sand. I've got pool filter sand in my tank here at work, it doesn't even lift up when I pour new water in after a vacuuming...

lol what if i put a sponge filter cover or the intake? i really want to make this work lol, and that pool filter sand sounds like a good idea!

Yea it might work with a heavier sand and a sponge.......but if your sand doesn't even lift when you pour water on it i'd be real worried about it compacting.........

sand is fine in many tanks. many people use it i used it as well.. but the fact that your return water comes from the bottom creates a problem, i think you would have to make the outtake like your intake, up away from the bottom so it wont constantly moving sand around.

would it be possible to just avoid putting sand over in that area of the tank? and just hardly using much sand at all anyway? i was just going to put enough to cover the bottom. Or would the sand still end up over there from the fish? And there might be a way to extend the outtake of the filter...ill look into it
