im getting a new 55 gal and want to put sand but i dont now how to clean it and im scarred it will get dirty and i wont beable to clean it so can someone plz help me?

put the sand in a bucket.
put a hose in the bucket.
turn the hose on.mix up the sand every few minutes.
when the water pouring out of the bucket turns clear stop.

I have been using pool filter sand. I haven't had to clean it at all, just put it in the tank slowly.

To clean it before putting it in the tank, put it in a garbage pail or small bucket and just keep flushing it with water until the water runs clear, this usually takes awhile, but pool filter sand is quicker to clean than play sand and both are cheaper than "aquarium" sand @ the LFS

To clean it in your tank just do it like a gravel vac just don't let the tube rest in one spot for too long or it'll start siphoning the sand out, quick motions over the wastes and then once every couple weeks or so rake the sand with your fingers.

Hope this helped.

pool filter sand is a tad bigger than playsand, and settles quite easy. just mix it up really good in a bucket with extra water, then with the tank mostly full scoop up half cups of sand (use a large plastic drinking cup, fill it half way) and slowly submerge and then pour the sand out spreading as you go with the cup barely above the bottom glass.

For cleanings, gently wave your siphon just above the bottm, and then vacuum up whatever floats up in the eddys/current you create. the heavier pool filter sand can even be slightly stirred with a weak simple siphon going and hte sand will just fall out if you lift it a few inches above the bottom.
