I have some fine gravel in my 75 right now but I have to move the tank and thought since it will already be empty I might as well convert to actual sand. Can I just use sand from home depot or do I need to find a fish safe brand? Just worried about prior chemical treatment.

i use homedepot sand. its called quickrete play sand. just make sure you rinse the crap out of it, if you think u did enough, rinse it again. lil cloudy once u put it in, but settles nicely after a while. or you can get pool filter sand. i hear it works n looks great.

Ive been told the sillica sand for pool filters is not fish safe. Can any one confirm this? Im a bit curious my self as Im going to put sand in my new tank and wondering if I can use the pool filter sand or not.

I used the stuff HD. $5 for a 50 pound bag vs. $25 for a twenty. Rinse well and it looks fine. But the light color does show all the dirt.

No more than a pound per gallon should be enough. 150 pounds in that tank would be about 6-8 inches deep.

i only have 50lbs in my 150gal. seems like plenty but my stingray pushes it everywhere so a few spots are bare now but it looks cool.

do not use silica sand. they have pool filter sand without it.

i've had pretty good luck with the HD sand. i was able to pick up 100lb bags for 7.95 each.
