Malaysian trumpet snails are a godsend in a sand tank. they keep the anaerobic pockets from building up under your sand and killing all your fish.
killer pockets in the sand:eek: o no:grinno: i cant have that i would die:nilly: if my fish are killed by a gas pocket im gonna can:irked: that idea but thanks:)

think of it this way: you wouldn't set up a large tank without filtration right? you need certain other things besides a tank to keep fish alive. this is the same deal. to make sand work you cant just throw sand in, you have to have certain other things to keep the sand from killing your fish. MTS are what I use but there are plenty of other ways to make sand work.

Appreciate the help on this. I'll probably be using pool filter sand or red flint aquarium sand. Both are coarse and natural looking. $$$ will probably be the determining factor.
I'm sure I can find hundreds of things I would much rather do than this "piece of cake", but I'm hoping the end results will be well worth the effort.

When I switched my 55 from gravel to sand I left everything as is and did half the tank at a time. The water got cloudy for a while but quickly settled. No problems and the difference was well worth the effort.

please share these other ways of making sand work if its not asking to much

you mean to keep the sand from building up gases? I know there are some cichlids that move the sand around alot, some catfish as well. there's even way to do it using an undergravel heater I think. I dont' know for sure on the others since I only use the snails but I'm sure there are people on here who use the other methods and hopefully they will post!

Between the geos and eel I don't think there will be much unturned sand.
