sands

It really depends what sand you use..... if the sand is very fine it will compact quickly and cloud up water every time a fish goes by! Silica Sand is very good for aquariums...! usually people buy playsand cus its cheap and it really can mess up a aquarium.. ! I agree i can get dirty very quickly... but all you need to do is skim a hoover over the top once or twice and its clean again!! Also i think Bichirs benifit from sand... they eat it and it helps them digest food,,

so how do you guys treat the bottom of your tank?gravel may be swallowed by bichirs since they are greedy;I'm keeping mine bare bottom so far, and I was thinking of using sand, do you also have some algae eaters in your tank?
I added plecos recently, they seems to be doing just fine, and I will put some snails too soon.

I paint the bottom glass either black or tan and go bare bottom now its easier for me to maintain.I also terrace a small portion for plants.I never have had a problem with algae so no algae eaters.I properly feed so theres no need for a cleanup crew either
ain't I juts special lol-Anne

gezzz, I've never though of it

well If you have no plants in the tank you could just put down a thin layer of sand... sand does look great in a tank and Bichirs seem to prefer a sand bottom.. But if you prefer low maintainence Then Beblondies idea is a good one..! But to be honest all you need to do is hover the sand once a week.... Also if you find you got problems with Algae Siemese algae eaters are very good cleaners... they also get around 5-6" so they wont be a snack for your Bichir... (Ornate wud prob eat em haha)

I just put pool filter sand in my tank yesturday..They had 2 colors so i grabbed white..I didn't clean the sand and it got alittle cloudy but is just about crystal clear now...I have tried sand in the past and didn't like it..It was really fine and kept getting in my aquaclears...This pool filter sand i got is not very fine grade and i have canisters now ....so far the Delhezi and Eel love it! They seem more active during the day ESP the Eels.

I wasen't going to rinse the sand because the dust causes cancer..I used a face mask when putting it in tank..Athough it doesen't really matter since i'm a smoker anyway lol.

it does not get stirred up and dusty like the fine sand...So far i do like it but my Fluval 405's will determine if it stays!
