To all you guys out there with sand in the tank. How is it??? I always wanted to put sand in a tank but they advice has always been stay away because of my fish. So what do you think. I am about to get a 220 and I was thinking sand. Here is what will be in there

2 Pikes, Managuese, Motaguese, Hybrid RD X Managuese, and a catfish to be later named. So what do you think. How would it work??

i had silver sand in my tank with breeding convicts and i personally hated it. always looked dirty despite appropriate maintenance. When i moved them to the bigger tank i put them onto dorset gravel, which has always been my favourite substrate. The only reason i used sand in the first place was to allow natural behaviour but i wouldn't use it again unless for specific fish, i.e. elephant noses. (this is my personal experience, it you had a better experience don;t flame me plz)

whats in the wild? gravel? :grinno:
i love sand, but it is hard to clean.
and get pool filter sand, very nice, heavy, sand.
home depot wanted 20 bucks a bag tho.
i got mine at a pool store for 6 bucks per bag. ;)
my fish love it.
2 bags of 50lb? did 100g,10g,10g,20g
watch your filters also.

Been wondering the answer to that question since 92.:WHOA: Seriously I have no clue:banhim: J/K but honestly I wondered the answer much into my late teens like tweentytwoteen:D I hear mixed reviews on the sand. The 220 comes with a wetdry and a canister. So what I need a different filter for the sand??

Sand looks great and your fish will appreciate it. Get pool filter sand, its cheap and heavy. Rinse it before you put it in the tank and you are good to go.

Sure it gets sucked up with a siphon but after the first time you know how to do it. Its also easier to use a regular tube rather than a python or aquarium, style siphon as it pulls stronger at the end since its going directly into and down the tube.

Sure the waste stays on top.....so vaccum it. Have some powerheads going so that the current pushes it all behind a rock or something. Its very simple and well worth it IMO.

I hope my MFK brethren do not lead me astray on this one. Like I said earlier I have always wanted it just been discouraged. Dont know if it'll take much convincing.

So basically you are saying I will just have to use a redular hose and vaccum the top because it wont mix up like with the gravel right?

Correct, and the sand looks much nicer.

I have sand and I love it too. I still vaccuum with my python and just hold the tube at a 45 degree angle and it does a good job. Just a little tip :)
