I have sand and I love it too. I still vaccuum with my python and just hold the tube at a 45 degree angle and it does a good job. Just a little tip :)

I was using my python to vaccum up until a few weeks ago when i tried just a 5/8" tube into a 5g bucket. It is much more precise, and you dont have to hold it at an angle...it was picking up waste a lot faster an inch above. Try it out!

Does the filter sand compress easily?

Alrighty I will...Thanks for the tip :)

i recently put sand in my 150 and i love it. my fish dig all the time and move sand around to suit them. its easy to clean bc all the poop rolls to the corners.

Alright its def a go. I gotta get some geos now to play in it. And some GT's

Banjo catfish are cool with sand because they bury themselves. Go to youtube.com and type in banjo catfish. My fiance put a video on there of his dads banjo. Its sweet.

Ok I have some what mixed reviews of sand. To me it all depends on the type and how much you use. If you you play sand, use very little because it pack down good, also traps bad gasses in it. it also gets in filters quickly and then they are noisy! you can beat these problem a few way: first use less sand. Second MTS. third buy fish that dig in the sand. And finally make sure the suction from your filter is 4+ inches from the sand. also play sand looks good till its dirty.

Now for they type I like the most, its not so much sand but very similar is agronite sand. this stuff is kind of pricey at most places. but the good stuff usually is. Agronite is usually kept in reef tanks, but can be kept in fresh tanks also , but you have to watch your ph. Agronite has many other good qualities too, it light enough for fish to move, but heavy enough not to get sucked up by the filter. It also helps to buffer the ph in the water.
It also gives a reef look to a fresh water tank.

I currently have two different tanks, one with each type. If I had to do it over again I would only use agronite!

When I went to home depot with my fiance (BlackKnife86), he was picking up some sand for his tank and the play sand bag said not to use it for aquariums. So we just grabbed a bag of all purpose sand. I really dont understand the difference but oh well it all worked out good.
