I use pool filter sand in nearly all of my tanks now. I like the stuff, even though I always manage to suck some of it out when I vac. Especially in my deep tanks that are hard to reach. But it's so cheap, it really doesn't matter.

I love sand. I add sand to ALL my tanks. Usually, if my tank already has gravel, the sand will eventually sink under the gravel. I'll just add more sand later. I never dump mass amounts of sand at once, it leaves milky bubbles at the surface and cloud my water. I'll just drop in handfuls to my liking.

Sounds like you arent rinsing enough before you put it in. The first time i used sand was the tahitian moon sand and it did the same after not enough rinsing. If you rinse well, you can dump it straight in the tank and it will go right down, no cloud.
ALSO...if you are worried about sand in the filters then use prefilters.
For those that dont know...to rinse sand put some in a 5g bucket (no more than 3/4 full of sand it wont be as effective and will take longer). Then hit it with a hose and the small particles will float. Dump out this water and do it again. Keep repeating the process until you can fill the bucket, move sand around, and not see any cloudiness or small particles.
I bougt 50lbs. of pool filter sand and a six pack of Coronas and changed one of my lil 10 gals to sand just to see how it would look. I love it. I mean I really love it. I always have wanted it and finally my fellow MFKers put me over the top. Feels good. NOw i gotta get my Geos's
i like sand only downer so far is keeping it clean but i hear if you put a powerhead blowing along the bottom it takes care of it. i need to try that
