Nice filters.. Im going that road myselfe, on a 1200 gallon tank that is, only filter is 2000$, you cant slip on the heart of it all..But about the backwash, you wont lose bacteria by backwashing? Your only taking out dirt, and the bacteria is still on the media, hanging there? They are said to be good at mechanical aswell.
I know the BB are "supposed" to be left alone during backwashing but I will feel much better alternating them.
No Trev no air pumps involved, since my system is still open(should be plenty of air mixed in going through the overflows and filter socks) I am really not too worried about the oxygen levels but only time will tell. It will probably be a few weeks before I even get them installed but I will keep everyone posted on how they perform for me.
I hang my filter socks from the drain pipe itself using a very large zip tie I hang over the notch from the elbow going down. The piece of pipe below the tie is not glued and extends below the water line making the sump pretty quiet. It is pretty crude but efficient.
