I am looking to start up a tank with a Sargassum Fish (Histrio histrio) and I was thinking about making it a macro algae planted tank too.

In my research I've heard that this frogfish needed anywhere from a 30 gal tank to a 100 gal tank. I was originally thinking about using a 35 gal non-standard size tank, but I'm not so sure now.

The macro algae will let the H. histrio hide, but I want to make sure that the one I've picked out will work. So I was thinking about:

Animals-
Sargassum Frogfish
Harlequin Serpent Star

Macros-
Either Hypnea pannosa or blue ochtodes
Either Cladophora prolifera or maiden's hair
Blue Scroll
Either Red grape caulerpa or dragon's breath
Baggy seaweed

I know some of these macros grow faster than the others, but I have no problem trimming them back and managing them. I'm trying for a tank that will need moderate lighting.

I'll have live rock and I was thinking about using a fine substrate in between the rocks.

I know I'll need a skimmer and probably a power head (or two) too.

Please let me know if I missed anything or if you have any suggestions :)

You'll be fine with the 35g since they don't move a lot at all. Everything sounds great. I'm only gonna give you advice on getting it on frozen. When I got mine and various scorpions i first fed them live ghost shrimp and corralled them using a feeding stick. This way they associate the feeding stick with food. Then I started gutload ing the ghost shrimp then freezing them and place them on the feeding stick. Once they start feeding from that I placed various frozen fish on the stick right after feeding it a ghost shrimp and from there they'll take anything. Just be careful and place the food on the very tip. If the frogfish gets poked by the stick, it might never feed again from it and it'll be harder for it to start trusting the stick again. Hope that makes sense

Thanks for the advice!

I just bought a 40 gal breeder! It was the second to last day of the $1 gal sale at Petco so I went a head and bought the tank, a stand, and a cover for way less then my original plan :)

Sounds awesome, take lots of pics! I'm interested in trying one of the scorpions one day.

Nice advice on the stick Ivan!

Anytime man. Never fails with me!

Those by far have the best footprint for any nano reef tank imo. Your angler will love it!

Okay here's a related but different question: when should I add the macros? Should I add them towards the beginning of my cycle with the LR? Or should I wait until after the cycle like you normally would? Since they absorb the the nitrates in the tank that will be coming from the cycle would it speed up my cycle? I've heard that when the lights come on at first there is usually an algae bloom, but wouldn't the macros more or less out compete the bloom and actually grow better themselves?

I hope I don't sound like a total newbie in asking, but now that I have my tank sitting in my room it just came to me about my timeline from here on out.

You can just throw them in as the tank is cycling. All they really depend on is light and they will absorb nitrates but you don't need to worry about having a cycled tank like with fish and inverts

Thanks for the info! I got lights today and I went around town asking LFS's their prices on LR and sand

Next question running through my head: Power head vs circulation pump and which do I need?
