i've never kept them but i've talked to a few people who have. some say they're just like any other eartheater. others have said they're alot more prone to HITH. it might depend on WC or CB fish or the stock you get them from

I have also heard about HITH being a factor. I have never seen any CB for sale only WC.

I have 3 and they are all doing great with normal tap water that is conditioned.

However in the future when they are bigger and maybe breeding size I may connect some co2 to the tank to lower the pH but as of now they are happy.

I would post a picture but they aren't as nice as the picture you posted so i'm going to save my time. :)

What's your water hardness?

I have never had a chance to care for one of these guys before. In fact, Im pretty new to the Geos. I never cared for them until just recently when I actually paid a bit of attention to one. LOL They are very cool!

I do know that you can regulate you're water parameters to keep the maintenance up for a particular fish. Don't be afraid to get the guy you truly want! Hopefully you're LFS is cool enough to test you're water for you so you can adjust accordingly. Or buy a test kit.

It might cost you a bit to start but the products you need will last a while and keep the fish healthy long term.

Or, try to find one of these guys that would be considered tank raised so it is already used to harder conditions.

I test my tanks and tap water once every week, when I'm doing water changes. I will have to have a RO setup to really give them their true natural conditions. Theres not enough peat moss or pillow softners to get my tap water down to their parameters like in the wild.

I have one around 4" in a 6x2x2 found him to be quite easy going and not fussy. he eats metay foods, frozen, tetra prima and spiruleena. At the start he would peck at my sat. Pappatarra but hes mellowed down. Living in a PH around 5.9-6.0

Thats your tap water Bruce, or you use part RO water?

Chicago tap water is pretty damn hard too, but I did see them for sale in one local place recently. Last time I went back they were gone so someone must've taken them. I have never seen one as cool looking as that photo though... if they all end up that way maybe I'll try to get some eventually. (When I move I'm getting a RO filter to make my geos happier.)

I believe RO will be my best bet. Ahhh more maintenance!!! :( I need longer weekends or less fish..........

..........LONGER WEEKENDS:naughty::D

Age the water for the water changes. Make sure you have driftwood, and a filter with peat moss for filtration on that vat (the water change vat). Besides the water conditioner (Prime), the above mentioned additions will soften the water and lower the pH to the needed parameters.

It's not that hard, in the stand of your tank keep a smaller tank for the water changes and age the water ...weekly water changes should give plenty of time for the "aged" water to reach perfect parameters.

A little work to do, but worth it, right?

Thanks Marius. I do age my water for 24 hrs. I have plenty of driftwood which really doesn't help my hard water that much. I have not tried the peat moss yet. I have a bale of sphagnum peat moss left over from when I owned my wholesale nursery so I will try that. Do you know how often to replace it? The tank is a 125 and the filter is a (1)FX5 and (1)Marineland 400.

I think I will bag the peat moss in filter bags and put it in my Marineland filter and see how that works. Now as far as the water I age in a 55 gal plastic barrel, not real sure about the peat moss for it other than just sitting a bag of peat moss in it while it ages (I do run a powerhead in the barrel while it ages). Sound alright to you folks?

The first 180 gallon I get goes to these guys. Amazing fish. The seemed to grow okay in our LFS when we got them in, pH 6.8 or so ... but we did keep them in the planted tank to help keep the nitrates down. Never kept them in a personal aquarium yet though. One day.

I keep buying anything labeled "Jurupari" since all Satanoperca are generally lumped together by LFSs... I find HITH a problem with my Leucosticta, but 2 20% water changes a week halted that, as well as adding "micro-vert" to their frozen food, to make up for any vitamin deficiencies. My two 3" juvenile "Jurupari" are slowly becoming speckled, but I believe they will end up being Leucosticta. Still crossing my fingers that they mature into Daemon!

Hail Satanoperca!

...Except 'true' Jurupari. They are bland as hell. I've got two, they are just silver, and nothing else. The Leucosticta put them to absolute shame.

Seems to be the standard breeding dress of the Colombian daemons peathenster.
