Since Justin is being modest I will throw it out there and let everyone know what a BIG accomplishment this is in the Cichlid hobby. I would not be surprised, if/when you get fry, that a publication or two would be interested in a well written account of the whole thing. I can ghost write it if you want (if you're busy or something, obviously you are not illiterate... I was a English major though). I would say there's some sort of clever fee or something, but I don't want any fry and I've bummed enough equipment off you already. :D

lol

Well done Justin. Good job !!

Looking forward to seeing the fry !

Very nice! Congratulations on the spawn!

I pull my male G. parnaibae after about 4 - 5 days of holding to strip him. The fry are usually a couple days away from free-swimming at that point, so I put them in a net breeder and float them in an empty 20 gallon tank. I just use the net breeder to keep them from rolling all around the bottom. Not sure how long it takes maps to hatch, but the timeline is similar for most SA cichlids that I've kept -- 2 - 3 days for hatching and another 5 - 7 days before free-swimming.

Stripping the fry is a bit nerve-wracking if you've never done it. You have to handle them firmly but gently at the same time. You don't want the adult fish thrashing around and stressing themselves out, or swallowing/injuring the fry. I hold the parnaibae in one hand under the water, usually in a big bucket or container, and gently pry his mouth open with the blunt end of a paperclip (thanks for the tip, Peter!). Once his mouth is open, I move him back and forth in the water with his head tilted toward the bottom and eventually the fry come tumbling out.

Lately he seems to have caught on because he now eats the eggs on around day 3. He used to hold them until 5 or 6 days. :irked:

Man those are so wicked Justin! And what an accomplishment!
I hope mine will look this good one day!

Great work, Justin! I hope you are very successful with breeding this species. You are on the verge of documenting a rarity in the hobby. Keep us all updated with this project. If your efforts are published I'd like an autographed copy!

great spawning!!!
congrats, yes, this is an epic day.
I have geos and satanopercas (leucosticta), but I just have reached breeding my geophagus steindachneri.
