Saum and Gt's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are two fish that fall under the name 'Green Terror' the false Green Terror - Gold or White/Silver Saum which is mostly commonly sold everywhere or the true Green Terror the Stalsbergi. There are some key differences between the Saum and the Stalsbergi in terms of max length, temperament and coloration.

Hey everyone, im new to the forum seems like a great site tho! Anyway i have a few questions if anyone would be able or willing to help answer them that would be great! I just set up a 125G Tank with 5 Nice size peices of Drift wood (Moponi..I think) also addes some nice live plants (Java Fern and Anibus) heard the GT's dont mess as much with these plants and so far so good! I have also stocked the tank with 3 GT's one 4" the other two 2" and a pleco. MY questions are 1. Is this tank big enough fo the three of them? and Two at what age/size can you tell GT's sex and will the begin mating? Also any tips for getting them to mate? Thanks

With Saums sex can often be visually seen around the 2-3" mark. In regards to tank size, if a pair forms up they may or may not beat up the 3rd, I've had Saums spawn in a community setting without them going psycho and at the same time I've had to remove everything else in the tank with another pair. For mating just let a pair form and I found after a large water change with cooler (not cold) water kind of got them in the mood.

Here are a few photos of my tank, And thank you for the replay! I also have a red spot Severum in there im planning on moving him once the GT's get a bit bigger! let me know what you think Thanks again

@beerad555

To add a bit more from my own experience (ymmv), the Stalsbergi are a bit smaller then the Saums but they seem to be more active. Also the Stalsbergi seem to have more attitude - however with that said I've had male Saums in the past that have been on completely different ends of the aggression spectrum, but for the most part are calmer and less aggressive then the Stalsbergi. It is very rare to find a Stalsbergi in a LFS unless it's one that really knows its stuff or if it was a special order that fell through.

@Jhoss1511

In the second pic, the Saum in the upper left appears to be female (darker coloration) and the one swimming across the tank is a male.

The darker coloration could be from the lighting though and it's hard to tell from that angle but I agree that the one swimming across the tank is most probably male. If they pair up it'll be just dumb luck. best way to get a pair is to get 6 juveniles and grow them out together and have them pair up cuz they choose their mate, so even if u have a male and female it doesn't mean they'll pair up. They might but chances r slim.
OP's question has been answered above

Thanks for all the responses! That one is always that dark! and I have another one, you cant really see in the pictures i have that is real colorful (Probably a male) and him and that darker one which you all say could be a female, have been lip locking and waving their tails at each other! Is this a good or bad sign? Also Alexanian is that your GT pictured? Beautiful flipping fish!! how old?
