after i left for school about 3 months ago my monitor stopped eating very much. my family is taking care of him and they say he'll only eat 3 or 4 cockroaches a week. before i left he would eat anything i put in front of him. they did put him in a much bigger cage, but i still don't understand what would be wrong. i'm home for thanksgiving and found him emaciated and i'm afraid if he doesn't get an appetite soon he will die. please help!

what is his set up like? heat gradient and hot spot, substrate, cage material, water quality, anything else you can think of that might be important.

cage is a 60 by 18 footprint with 4 inches of beach sand, a large hide a log, a 250 watt ceramic heat emitter that is always on and a i think 160 watt power sun for 4 to 6 hours a day. basking spot is 110 during the day and about 90 at night with a heat gradient all the way down to room temp, ~70. his water bowl is changed daily and gets bi weekly soaks in the tub.

hmm my knowledge on monitors is not the best but that all sounds alright.. you may want to look into a vet visit

Is it possible he is impacted from the sand?

Monitors rarely get impacted from small particle substrates if they have a good hot spot like that, but it is not entirely out of the question

how big is his "much bigger" cage relative to him? is it possible that he's stressed?

also, if you really want to get him eating immediately, just throw in a live mouse..

i don't think so. my mom says she never feeds him in the cage. and he gets soaked pretty often. is there something that can spike an appetite? i've tried eggs and ground turkey so far.

I would try pinkies and night crawlers and make sure he has enough space to hide in. Savannah's like to squeeze tightly into hiding spots. I would put the listed food items in a dish near his hiding spot and leave him totally alone for 24 hours. If that does not work I would try canned dog or cat food. It is not the best thing for them but they ususally can not resist it. My tegu goes crazy for it.
