Okay so when I go to look at them I will have the guy show me them all outside of the tank and pick the meanest of them all. About how long will the 5'Lx4'Wx2.5'T suit him?
I would say 2 years, maybe a little more or less depending on how he grows.
You won't have to have him take them all out, when he sticks his hand in just watch which ones run/hide, which ones just lay there, and which ones try to eat his fingers.
Yeah but asking to see them out of the cage would make the guy stick his hand in the tank. Back to this question. Would you be able to sex it by pictures?
Standard rule for most animals is you can't sex them until they are atleast subadult size which would be around 3ft. You could go to the vet and have it probed if your that pressed but unless your breeding, it shouldn't matter.
I don't plan on breeding. Just like knowing the sex of my animals well except my fish. Only ones I know what sex they are is my breeding oscars. I prefer to know their sex so I can name then correctly. I can wait in till he reaches maturity before I name it.
A pet store by where I work. I got my Central American Boa, and when my mice aren't breeding fast enough the mice from there. It's called City Zoo in Elmira, New York.
Any really good advice. I officially have been told I can get one, and dad agreed he will help me build the cage. I have how I will build it in mind. So probably will look at them this Friday. Then depending on whether my dad will pay and I pay him back or if I pay might get it Friday or next Tuesday.
if you post a pic of its vent when you get it, I should be able to tell. monitors are not too difficult but it takes some practice to sex a small one. look for the femoral pores and a hemipenal bulge to distinguish males from females.
Also, monitors grow very quickly and eat every other day. I feed mine boiled eggs and crickets as a main diet and supplement with cat food and mice once or twice a week. I also will occasionally give him bait minnows when I have extras. On this diet he has grown about a foot and a half a year and this is slow compared to most others that get a rodent diet.
Keep a very hot basking spot of around 130*F and a cool side of about 80*F. These guys like it relatively dry but I mist mine once a week during the winter months to replicate the wild a little more. I also bring the temp down by about 20 degrees everywhere in the tank (this can be done simply by switching from a high wattage bulb to a low wattage bulb but it is best to use a temp controlled heating pad or wire).
provide a water bowl that is large enough for your monitor to soak in but it doesnt need to be huge. I have heard mixed reviews on the depth of the substrate- I have had success with a partially buried hide box and about three or four inches of cypress mulch and play sand mixed together.
