Savannah monitor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea thier not picky. Just know the nutritional value(don't feed alot of fatty foods) and don't feed anything from outside.

Okay so I said what I was doing to my sister. She tells me that she was planning on getting a Savannah for her 3 year old daughter. Because it is not fragile like a bearded dragon. And that she asked for the guy at the LPS to feed the bigger Savannah and that they are feeding it rats, which makes her not believe that they mainly eat insects because of the size. Any way I can either divert her from this idea or help her out. She wouldn't let me prove to her that I was not lying by showing her this thread.

Savannahs apear to be higly specialized invert eaters, in the wild they dont eat anything else then buggs. By the way I dont recomend getting something so big and strong for a 3 year old straigth away, even a gentle species such as this. Consider also that allmost all savs are wild cauth wich means they could have nasty bugs lurking in the mouth and claws. I would recomend that she waits longer for a big species such as this. By the way its important to say that no reptile is a kid toy, if there is going to be interaction adults have to be present at all times, the interaction can not go behond the reptile´s own patience and the kid has to be told to wash its hands. Has she considered a adult blue tongue skink, they are much easier to keep then beardys. Or a adult big tortoise like a red foot or a sulcata?

The only thing she has is a central american boa which is the sister to mine. But I told her that it will easily hurt her kid and she don't believe it. Even though when she saw the adult one feed she heard he rats skull crack, that was not enough proof. I don't suggest her daughter having any reptile in till she gets bigger. She has killed fish and my sister knows nothing about them. The main reason why she wants reptiles is because her bf is into them. She likes snakes but she thinks I am crazy because of what I have. Also tries telling me wrong on the care for my snakes when I have been them longer then she has. Even if she were to get a Savannah I already can tell it will become obese. Her bf loves to power feed their snake, and she wont be able to afford enough insects for the Savannah so it will end up being fed only mice. So really any advice of getting her off the idea of one would be good. She can't even afford to pay her own phone bill. So I see the boa and monitor being crampt in to small cages. Right now the boa is in a cage not big enough. It is a 1'x1'x18" terrarium and the snake is at least 3'. So I see the same fate for any lizard she gets.

You can say what you want but some people just won't listen. I know people who buy RES as babys and put them in one of those god awfull 5 gallon turtle death traps. If it dies they get a new one. If it out grows the enclosure(What they consider outgrown) they just release it in the backyard and wish it the best of luck. A full grown sav is a powerfull animals with a bone crushing bite. i wouldn't let a 10 year old keep one. But if she is really that stuborn maybe she needs a trip to the emergency room to teach her a lesson. Some people have to be burned to realize fire is hot.

Feeding insects to a large lizard is going to cost a ton. My 30" tegu can very easily put down over a couple dozen superworms in a sitting. I suggest you start a colony of something like feeder roaches. That way when he gets bigger it won't be too hard to feed insects.

I get crickets free so they wouldn't be an issue, How big of a tank would feeder roaches need to breed in? As mean as it will sound I will probably laugh when she learns the hard way. And I figured out her boa is almost 4' and in a 18"x18"x2' terrarium. And she said she can't afford a bigger tank. I am half tempted to tell her to give it to me in till she can afford it. She can't even feed it I am giving her mice I pay for. So the monitor will be bad also.

I was just checking your response on why you choose a sav. Just making sure it was going to be the normal response of "it is what I can afford" which in the long run savs cost 4 times more then the dwarfs. Savs are very loveable. They are food driven beggers for sure just like oscars.
Just for fun here is some of my little guys
