I've used black beauty in my own tanks and customers' tanks. We also used it at the LFS I worked at. Never had any problems. I wouldn't put it with any type of sand sifters, but it looks awesome in a tank full of limestone With Malawian or Tanganyikan cichlids.

I think there is a place to be cost effective, but this seems to enter the "cheap" realm. I hate the idea of throwing slag in my tank for many reasons so I went with 3M Colorquartz. The best looking black I could possibly think of. $17.87 for a 50 lbs. bag. 10 minutes washing time for each bag. Sinks to the bottom with no small particles. Best deal I could find for the best quality.

Go to a pool builder supplier. Actually, first call around to find who builds pools then call them. Usually the places that sell chemicals to pool cleaner companies are a good start. Most pool builders stock this stuff, but say they will only sell to licensed pool builders. Just explain you need like 6 bags and they will sell it to you. They don't want the general public buying the bulk to build their own pools so just tell them it's for an aquarium.
