I have a 90g being filtrated by two ac70s at the moment but am running into the problem of paying for a little too much for electricity. Would it be more efficient as far as electricity goes to buy one big sump or canister filter then having my two filters?

An ac70 draws 6watts which is not very much. I would look at the equiment you are running like heats or bigger pumps. If you are really trying to cut electricity in the house get a 'kill a watt' type devise and see what is sucking up power the most.

The heater in your tank will be the biggest draw, but this time of year it shouldn't be much. Depending on the type of lighting you have and how much it's on that can be a big draw also.

i went thru a similar situation and found by killing the time my lights are on from 8 hrs to like 3 hrs and insulating top, back and sides of my tank made a big difference. I am currently working on insulating the bottom before winter comes. when i added filtration i just used spomge filters driven by airstones and was pleasantly surprised at there effectiveness- they dont look great but they worked great. so yeah dont cut your ac 70s as you probably wont notice the difference. saved about 16 dollars a month just by doing this on my 125 so im gonna do it on my other tanks as well.

12w of power to filter your tank is nothing. you won't notice that on your bill at all.

in my area, it would cost 48 cents to run 12w of filtration for the month.

yours is probably just as cheap.

as mentioned, your heaters are what draw the power.

if you post how much you are paying per kilowatt-hour, we can easily do the math and calculate how much your setup is costing (if you post the wattages of the equipment you are using)

then you know for sure.

most of the time, the tank is nothing. its other stuff in the house.

I think you will find there is more 'work' done to the water via a sump than the other two, regarding head height pressure.

As for reducing the leccy bill...Throw out the iron and the clothes dryer.

Geez...electricity really expensive in Pittsburgh?

12w your lucky.

Dreading my next bill
4200w of aquarium heating (coldish winter)
1050w of pumps
1100w of lighting on 8 hours a day
100-200w of full time accessories (uv,moitoring equipement etc)

Going to have some serious cutbacks soon.

wow. how many tanks are you running and what sizes? I assume you have a lot of tanks? here in Ontario our winters are very cold as well, but I don't need to go more than 3w per gallon to keep things nice and toasty for the fish. my tanks are in my basement as well (although its a finished ground level basement, not below ground, which helps)
