I have a 90g being filtrated by two ac70s at the moment but am running into the problem of paying for a little too much for electricity. Would it be more efficient as far as electricity goes to buy one big sump or canister filter then having my two filters?
my guess is that your aquarium is one of the lowest power users in your house, if you ahve multiple comps try going down to using 1 and sharing if necessary, bump the thermostat a couple of degrees, take cold showers, and try not to use the microwave.

you can save anywhere between 60 and 150$ a month by doing the above.

agreed.

a typical 90g setup might use:

12w for filtration
80w for lights
250w for heater

total, 342w

of this, the heater is only on 50% of the time, same for the lights.

so it hardly draws much power at all.

lets say you are paying $0.10 per kw hour:

it would cost: $24 per month if everything was on 24/7. but its not.

in actual fact, it would probably be $10 per month if you are paying $0.10 per kw hour.

now, go and check out how much it costs you to run your fridge for the month :)

I pay 0.078 per kwh

With a/c running and everything done and done its 157$ a month for a 1800sq ft house.

But I owe 341.94 LOL. Musta missed that last payment:nilly:

how much are MFKer's paying per kilowatt hour? our rate (non peak times) here in Ontario is $0.056 per kilowatt hour.

although word is our rates are going up drastically, so time will tell. even if they go up by 15%, its still going to be easily managable as far as my fishroom goes.

Wow. we're at .1022 kwh in northern Ca. Tier 2/peak pricing is .1818 kwh.

.104 here in ct

Tanks dont really use much. My bill is flat all yr until summer when the AC is needed. That alone jacks the bill up from 90ish to 140ish.

Fish tanks really havent changed my bill all the much, but if you crank the ac, make the house cool and the fish heaters are bumpin to heat them up then youre running a lot of crap. I also run lights maybe once a week so i dono what they do to bills at all. Sun is my light ha

i cant say the entire 16 dollars was from the tank mods i started to be a lil stricter about lights being left on and so on. this is kinda hard to do with a 7 year old

Electricity is cheap, if your bill is out of control you probably have something malfunctioning. My electric bill is about $70 and I probably run the dryer 3 cycles for every load of wash plus we have a computer, 52" tv, and 800w surround sound system that are on at least 16 hours per day on top of all that I have a 20 year old beer fridge in my 90 degree garage that is set at ice cold. On another topic if $10 a month is that big of a deal your bigger issue should be getting your priorities in order and live within your means.

I am actually in an apartment. I am not sure exactly how much they pay for electricity, but once we go over a certain amount we have to pay. Its typically not hard to stay within only having to pay $5 extra without the aquarium. This past month I had $50 over the amount free.

i use my neighbors electricity. they are always screaming at each other about the bills.
