I adopted my cat, Misha, from a shelter that was just about to put her down due to not being adopted out within the required time period.
She was my constant companion and saw me through 4 company relocations in a 6 year time period. No matter where we lived, I could count on her to rush to the door when I came in with a purr you could hear from across the room. More often than not, she would appear in my lap as if she were a ghost. Already nodding off and purring and leaving me wondering how she got there in the first place.
Two days ago, she didn't greet me at the door. When I found her, she looked up at me but, no purring. I took her to the vet and he informed me that her kidneys were shutting down. After IVs and antibiotics, there was no improvement and her kidneys shut down completely this morning. I went to the vet's to say goodbye and all I kept hearing was how the vet was late for an appointment. I convinced the doc that I knew how to administer the injection (started out as a corpsman in the Navy) and he OK'd me to take her home. I didn't want her to die in a damn cage anyway since it's what I rescued her from 6 years ago.
I brought her home and let her onto one of her beds. I brushed her out and she purred weakly. I sat with her 'til she fell asleep. I tried to rouse her with a light whistle that usually perks her right up but, got no response. I took this as her cue for me to let her go. I grabbed my cam and shot these 2 final pics. It's times like this that make us realize there never are enough pictures.
I performed the only act left to me as her friend and bid her goodbye when I could no longer detect her heart beating.
I will miss her.
