Scared fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not to freak you out, but it literally took 2 months for my bifas to come out of hiding, with dim lighting and all. I had to be patient and provide them with numerous hiding place so they could feel more secure. It still took FOREVER though. Now they never hide and seem to be loving it. The suggestions about dithers are good I think.

Well i can wait like 2 months to see if something has changed, but if they are still scared after that, I will need to get rid of the JD.

Ill also buy some more wood to make more hiding places, just to see if that might work.

About the school fish, I want a cheap one, in case they get eaten. They just have to be very fast. I know the rummynose are small, but aint all school fish small when u buy them? Because they are juve?

Most are pretty small but my lfs usually has decent sized giant danios, tiger barbs and rainbows so it really depends on availability. Any would work though and some chasing will happen, but that's kind if the point with dithers..... building confidence. I do agree with buying cheap ones just in case.

On a side note, if I can actually see the fish I'm buying( as opposed to buying online) I usually pick the one that stays out at the glass when I'm checking them out. You may want to consider swapping your Jd out for one that is more outgoing. Look for the largest most colorful of the bunch..... and fasten your seatbelt

Thx for the info! I always buy my fish in the store.
The JD I bought wasnt scared in the shop! But in the shop tanks, they dont have hiding places!

And I highly doubt they will take the JD back, in Belgium most shops dont take fish back. The only thing I could do, is placing her on the internet and hoping smn wants to buy her.

I was thinking about these school fish:
- Moenkhausia Pitteri
- Some kind of Hyphessobrycon species
- Danio malabaricus (but I prefer south american species though)

EDIT: Ok after reading on the net, I decided to go for Moenkhausia Pitteri +- 15 of them. They seem to school good when there are larger fish in the tank.

Sounds good. Let us know how it all goes .

Years ago, I learned that my schooling dither fish liked to JUMP out of the water if pursued by big fish repeatedly so keep that in mind or IMO cover your tank ;). Good luck! I hope they relax for you soon :).

Thx for the info!

The tank is covered with glass, so they cant jump out. I only open the glass when im feeding them, or when im changing water, so ill have to keep an eye on it then.

Im gonna get the fish this afternoon :)

Ow yea, how do i introduce the fish on a way they dont get eaten?

Should i throw in alot of food first? And then afterwards the fish?

Went to the shop and bought x12 Gymnocorymbus ternetzi.

Ill take pictures later.

The shop dude told me i should take some water to the shop, so he could examine it. He thought it was because there was too much phosphate in the water?
I would like to believe him, if all fish were as scared as the JD. But its only the JD who is scaring the others. Besides I dont want to add any chemicals in my tank water.

What would u guys do? Do u think phosphate could be the cause of the JD's fear?
