I’m getting a little nervous about my Carpintis, Bruce. We had some company over for Father’s Day. Turned the tank lights off usual time. I was in the other room and noticed my young cousin was right up to the glass and Bruce was going crazy. My little cousin is only six so I know he doesn’t understand, not his fault. 2 days later and Bruce is still very skittish and jumpy. Will he get over this? I’m just nervous because he is such an outgoing fish, usually will eat right from my hand. Am I overthinking this?

Is it possible any contaminants got into the water without you noticing?
Likely he is just still spooked and needs some time to settle, maybe try to add some floating cover and extra hiding spaces if there aren’t enough.

I don’t believe so. I didn’t notice anything and I’m constantly checking the tanks throughout the day just making sure everything looks fine. I’ll try adding some extra hiding spots. Thanks.

I think he is just getting spooked out when someone walks in the room. He calms down when he realizes that it’s me. Water tests all look good and I don’t notice anything wrong with him physically. He’s also eating normally. I’ll do a pretty generous water change just in case though. Hopefully it’s just me being paranoid.

Sometimes I see a marked rise in aggression or skittishness if the tank has become warmer for some reason, sometimes heater malfunctioning or room being warmer or intense lights even.

I’ll keep an eye out for anything. Thanks to the others as well for replying. I have a chair to the side of the tank and he’s just here chilling next to me. Love this guy I hate to see him acting unusual.

What size is he, and the tank? Looks like a juvie still?

He has a 55 all to himself right now. Gonna have to get him into a 75 pretty soon. He’s actually around 5 inches. The picture doesn’t really do him justice. He’s usually bursting with personality always excited when I walk in the room. But after the small incident 2 days ago he’s been skittish and very nervous. Which of course makes me nervous.

5" is still a juvie ? At that size, he's still a baby when it all boils down to it. With every large, aggressive CA species I've kept (which is pretty extensive, and carpintis included), juvie fish go through various "fear periods" as I think of them at various times as they mature. They'll be super confident and outgoing for ages, and then suddenly they play shy and hide and spook at everything. Then they'll go back to confidence, and often hit another round of wussiness again later down the line. Literally every juvenile large CA cichlid I've ever kept has done this. They're still babies, small enough to potentially food to many others if they were wild, so I think it's just an instinctual part of their maturing process. Bruce may have been pushed into a fear period by your visitors and being a 5" juvie, could take a bit for him to bounce back to his previous confident self. As long as he's eating properly and otherwise looks healthy, I wouldn't worry about it. I'd advise giving him some more decor, a wide open space like your set up only makes a scared fish more skittish. More cover will make him feel more confident while he regains his ego. And adding some dithers may help, though options are limited in a 55. Giant danios are my go to and would be my recommendation...just make sure to QT before adding if you go that route so Bruce DOESN'T get sick.

Thanks for this. Makes me feel much better. He’s my first cichlid so I’ve really grown attached to him. Already ordered some extra cover and decor on Amazon that should be here very soon. Hopefully doing that helps. And if I have to, I do have a small spare tank to QT dithers.
