Scared fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No problem! I have a few juvies of a couple different species doing this exact thing at the moment...like my 11 juvie midas that until a few weeks ago were confident as hell and now all skitter for hiding spaces when I walk in the room lol. They'll grow out of it and be giant a-holes in no time ?

I’ll keep an eye out for anything. Thanks to the others as well for replying. I have a chair to the side of the tank and he’s just here chilling next to me. Love this guy I hate to see him acting unusual.

Got it. I also meant to add, sometimes if a heaters malfunctioning it could be leaking current. Sometimes the surges are so minute that you can barely feel them with your hand, but enough to drive a fish nuts. It's probably a long shot if your heater is in good condition, but I've had this problem before so thought I would mention it.

As Sinister Kisses said above, it is a juvie at the moment, so upgrading from a 55 to a 75 is a temporary baby step at best, better off waiting/saving for a significant size upgrade, a tank in a 6 ft length (at or preferably "above" the 100 gal range).

A male carpintus will easily outgrow a 75
The one below is in the 10-12" range, thick and tall.

Thanks again, He’s is doing better now. Still not 100% himself but way less jumpy. Any way to know for sure if the heater might be leaking current? I’ll definitely try unplugging it for the day to see any big differences.

I would just check it over and see if its damaged or cracked anywhere you didn't see before.

Thanks daunes. How long would it take for a Carpintis to hit that 10-12 inch mark in a 75 gallon with strict water changes 40% or more every 2-3 days? I have a bit of a plan to one day get him into a 6 foot tank. I’d like to know if this will work for the fish. I was going to put him into a 75 until I’m done with college. About a year and a half. After college, straight to the police academy where I’ll be making enough to move out and look for a place with the space for a 6 foot tank. Of course nothing is guaranteed to go as planned. If he grows too large in that year and a half timespan, then I would have to look for someone to take him. Sucks but it’s more important to me that he has enough space.

In May of 2012, mine were about 1-1.5"
As you can see, within 10 months they had reached the size below.

The dominant male, (the one in my 1st pic/post), was almost 12". by Oct 2013.

That’s actually quite similar to what I’ve seen with Bruce. Almost exactly 8 months ago I got him at around 1.5-2 inches. Now a little over 5. What’s your honest opinion about keeping him in the 75 for that time? I’d love to keep him and get him into maybe a 125 in the future. Just don’t have the ideal space here at my parents house. It’s possible but at the end of the day, it’s up to my parents. Their home of course. Should I keep him for the time being and when it comes time find him a better home?

This is a common dilemma,
I was able to keep fish in my parents basement until I was drafted,
I probable knocked off significant value of their place with my obsession.
So basically had to postpone and large fish keeping until out of the military, and even when in college, because apartments in my area restricted tanks to 50 gallons.
It wasn't until I bought my own place, a place that I was able to ruin myself, that I was able to keep the fish I wanted.

Yup that’s the dilemma. Most likely I will get a 75 and keep him in their until it’s time to find him a better home. I’m sure there are plenty of people that would love to have him. Not sure what my schedule will be like once in the police force as well. I plan on getting into fish and wildlife which is another few months of training. Btw much respect for your service in the military. I believe you mentioned you were in Panama, correct? Is that where you did service? Regardless, much respect I come from a military family.
