Mine is super skittish solo and very active with other fish. Anything I do while he's solo puts him into a panic attack. With other fish he's always out front.
I've added sand to lots of Cichlid tanks with fish in them over the years to no ill effect. With as much as they dig and sift through sand naturally I've never had an issue.... granted I've never aimed for a fish when adding it.
