scared to do Water changes now.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will try to call them again. My tank is almost a year old, and I have been doing 50% WC for a while now. I might have done 1 wc before with this bottle of prime, but the more I think about it the less likely prime seems. If it was bad The fish would all die from Chlorine.

I will be testing my tap as soon as I get off work tonight.

Everyone seems fine again today, The only thing I can think of is the pH shift, tap is 8.6 tank is 7.8 - 8.0. The strange thing is the pH has always been this way. I guess I can try to do every other day 25% WC and not 2 50% WC a week. There are no other things in the tap that I see different, but I only have a basic test kit.

when ever ive seen stress or death after a water change where nothing i have done has changed or its the same way ive done forever and then suddeny theres a roblem i always suspect a change in the tap water. Thats why i suggested u call the water company.

try adding aquarium salt with your next water change

table spoon per 5 gals
This is unnecessary. Doing this on permanent basis will put fish on stress in the long run as their osmoregulatory system is unable to take in the added electrolytes by the salt. There is no need to add salt. Besides, you are likely allowing the ich and any other pathogens to become resistant to the presence of salt which is another reason salt is no doubt not a necessity for every water change.

Nfored, was your water change regimen consistent before all this happened? If not, this could also be an explanation why your fish died.

dont do a 70% wc thats to much its like cycling the tank all over again from start
Most of the bacteria reside in filter and substrate, not the water column so I don't see why your tank would start nitrogen cycle all over again unless you failed to add dechlorinator in a chlorine and chloramine tainted water.

On my 55 gallon that I have been writing about I have done well with doing wc every tue and fri.

The tank that had the dead fish was my GF tank, she had been doing water changes, but when I test her nitrates for the first time in a long time they where over 80. so I did a 70 - 80% WC so I might have stressed the poor guppy to death.

Trying to get a hold of my water company is like trying to call G. W Bush all I can do is plead for them to tell me something and they just give me a run around.
