Scarlet Pink Jack Dempseys

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's more red than normal, but it is the 'normal' or 'classic' color form ... as someone mentioned, there are only 3 color forms of the jack ... regular, electric blue, and gold. That male has amazing coloration for sure, but it would still fall into the regular color form though.

the bottom one is definitely a regular jd but the top one is totally a red variation. there was a post a while back where someone had a red jd, great looking fish, only jd i'd own. um if i remember correctly someone said that sometimes wild jd's get a lot of red or something. in all actuality it is a regular jd but with more red.

I have always known of the 3 color morphs, but I have never seen so many red ones until lately; Now I think they could be considered red or pink jacks

Couldn't've said it better. Especially the bold.

its proly a hybrid jd thats why it looks that way...just to throw that out there:)

really cool to see the different variations of the jd. for those mentioning "purple" jds, i've keep regular jds in the past and i've seen them range in color- i always thought purple was regular trait- unlike those rich red, "gold/pink" leucistics , and blue gene jds.

To alleviate some confusion, the term "regular" should be tossed and and "wild type" should be used.

There are three color variants. Wild type, electric blue, and leucistic (also called pink). Your jack dempsey is of the wild type coloration. Yes, it's got some more red than most you see, but jacks with red are found in the wild.

To get technical a color morph is when there is a genetic mutation which causes a phenotype that is different from the wild type forms to be expressed (I.E. leucistism; which is an animal with reduced pigment).

Nice Dempsey it'll look good when older.
They also make good CA community IME.
Id say there is a desire in the crowd for the 'purpler' ones.
Dark background makes the blue sparkle.
