scarlet Pleco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol... their banned because of some bull the braziling government said they haven't been properly named. or scientific naming. something like that..

I think the real reason is that they dont want exotic pleco to go extinct like asian arowana..

Same with blk arowana.. they are banned from export in brazil.. the blk arowana u see now on market are from local breeders.. Thus.. the reason why prices are so expensive for these fish..

I think we;ll soon see other exotic plecos to be added on the banned list as well.. :(

:nilly: of course its a conspiracy theory of mine!

L-24 is banned along with a lot of others. Google pleco ban list and see how many cool plecos are now unavailable. I just lost my 12 inch scarlet. The brazilian government is worrying about the plecos going exctinct but the rainforest is going so fast they don't even know. Go figure!

Just keep your eyes open. You can dig one up every now and then. I found mine at the ACA Convention in August. Just stumbled across it and bought it on the spot.

Im pretty sure this vid is from Mexico where the plecs got released and now devastate the natural habitat.

From what I remember, exporting plecs has never been strictly legal. There was a 'negative list' that was absolutely banned and anything not on it was exported. Now IBAMA seem to have noticed that a lot of undescribed species were being exported. So in order to try and safeguard them in the long term they banned a lot of them for export. In the mean time they are trying to understand what impact the ornamental fish trade is having on them. However, the Brazilian government is wanting/going to build several hydro-electric dams across the amazon which will do the exact opposite of what IBAMA is trying to achieve.
