We took my 3rd/4th and Mrs. Z's 4th/5th classes on a field trip to Yaquina Bay (Newport, Oregon) the week before last. It was an unseasonably warm day for the Oregon Coast, so we really lucked out.

The boat was a 65' x22' fiberglass boat, really nice and roomy for 49 of us. First they pulled a plankton net and showed it to us with a digital microscope and two big TVs. Then they trawled the bottom a bit and dumped the catch into some shallow stainless "aquariums" for the kids to investigate. Awesome day! :)

Lucky kids, must have been interesting.

I hope they use "friendly" bottom trawling technique, if there is such a thing...

I never thought about it that much, but we DO go on a lot of field trips. This year we wil have gone on 6 or 7, including an overnighter at Opal Creek (arguably one of the most pristine pieces of old-growth temperate rainforest in the world:headbang2).

Our school is 10 miles from the nearest town, so for us to do anything outside of school is a trip.

By the way, what's "Dayum"

That looks like a pretty big crab! I never got to do this kind of stuff when I was that age.

I think it was relatively "eco-friendly", it was just a small research net (two kids hauled it in) and everything that was caught was returned alive within 15 minutes. The tour definitely emphasized sustainable fishing and environmental protection.
