I have several medium sized severums and would like schoolers to house with them. I hear rummy-nose are too small and could get eaten and barbs nip at fins. Any ideas?

40 gallon breeder

2 red gold sevs (3.5)
1 gold sev (4inch)

7 rummynose already, dont want to buy more if they will get eaten.

Try bleeding heart tetras, or red eye tetras. They are larger than usual tetras, and have a higher back, so should be safe. Also have a go at hatchetfish, the larger silver ones. And, one that just comes to mind, is charax, very cool fish.

In a 40G? I agree, too many. But as for the schoolers in question, the rummies should be OK along with most other tetras you might pick. Really small neons might be in danger. But if you're worried about it go with any of the high bodied tets like blackskirts, bleeding hearts, serpaes...

A 40 gallon breeder is fine as a grow out tank for 3 sevs, but owning such a tank I wouldn't even keep one adult sev in it.

As for tetras, both rummynose and red eye tetras will end up as lunch for an adult sev. Again, rummynose would be fine for now, but if looking for tetras that will stay with them in a transfer to a larger tank ... bleeding hearts, diamonds, or colombians.
