Hey,

After recently giving Harlequin Rasbora's a test in my tank, I've realized no place up here stocks them large enough to go straight into my tank without getting eaten overnight.

Can anyone recommend through theory or experience, a smaller schooling fish that I can get 3-6 (or higher, up to 10 if its recommended) to go into a 42Gal 3 foot (temporary).

Current residents are a 6cm Blue Acara, 5cm Green Severum, and a 3cm Firemouth.

Basically I'm after something quick and active to liven up the tank a little. Something with the same characteristics of Tiger Barbs, not not Tiger Barbs (I'm not a fan).

Cheers.

How about Congo tetras? They rock...one of my favorites. Pics don't do them justice. You have to see them to appreciate them.

Having a read up on these now. One of my local LFS stores said they were great and I agree, the males with the different tail fins look great too, but the whole "get 15 or so of these for a school" when they were $7 for females and $11 for males each sort of scared me off when I hadn't done any research.

$100+ impulse buys are a bit of a no-no for me :p

Just read recommended five, definitely a valid option as I think they're great looking fish. Still chasing more input though, might head around to the various LFS stores and see what they have in stock tomorrow.

You might want to give Buenos Aires tetras a shot. They look like mini tin foil barbs, are fast as all heck and do a great job at not getting eaten. I had a school of around a dozen of them in my 125 until a power outage wiped out the tank. They even schooled with my tin foil barbs on occasion.

These sound great, perfect size and match. In your experience, how much do you recommend to have in a 'school', and how were they with your plants?

I like my plants, don't want to see them all disappear over the period of a week :p

You don't have to get 15 Congos. I used to keep 5 males together with 4 Roseline sharks in a 55 with a 7-8" pair of breeding Severum as dithers and they we awesome. They're quick swimmers so not to get eaten and very beautiful. They get a wonder shine to their large scales and the fins are incredible. I stand by my recommendation but there's plenty of other choices too.

i have a small school of zebra danio in my tank. 3 disappeared and i have no idea who got them, my severums dont chase them and my dat is still a little too small for them. maybe they're getting eaten at night. i wanna try something else, found some serpae tetras that i might throw in for a while
