Schooling Fish Suggestions Please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
10-12" schooling fish..so I'd need at least 6..that's a lot of bioload .___. I think those are out ><

We are going to look at a tank tomorrow that the guy said is 72.5" long, 18.5" wide, and he didn't answer me about height though in the pic it looks about the same height as a 55g.

Sounds like a 125.
Have you thought of rope fish, I herd they are active when kept in groups or how about African butterfly fish ?

Rope fish stay on the bottom though I think, don't they? They also get really big :c Am looking for the schooler to be a mid to top swimmer as the bottom is for the bichirs.
I did think and had planned on an african butterfly fish but was told it probably wouldn't be a good idea as the bichirs would likely nip it and probably could eventually eat it. :(

A bichir is not going to be able to swallow an african butterfly easily.

I wasnt suggesting the tank is too small for schooling fish. I was suggesting it is too small for a schooling fish that wont eventually become a snack for the bichirs.

Glass cats do tend to be shy. They also have a habit of simply schooling in the filter's current and do not really swim around all that often.
Giant danios spend alot of their time speeding around the open water of the tank. They will explore hiding places and plants, but most of the time they will be in the open. That being said, I dont think they will spook your shy fish all that often. Also easy to breed, even I have had success. In spawning condition, they turn a very beautiful yellow/gold

Hmm..I may still try it then because I -really- want an ABF.

Ooh okay, I getcha. Sorry if I came off rude or anything! I don't mean to at all :)

Glass cats don't sound like the fish for me then. My dad also has to agree upon these, and he is the one paying is why I am worried about pricing. He likes pretty fish.
Giant danios seem very much the best option so far! I had originally planned on the smaller longfin zebra danios for my 55g but ended up with rummynoses since the danios are more subtropical. That is my concern with the giant danios as well as I think all the fish in my stocking like it pretty warm?

Thank you again so very much for all the responses :D

Its not like w/ tetras or something, you can keep 3 and they wont freak out and beat each other up if its not a certain number

Ah okay..that's interesting! But then we don't have a beautiful big group of fish D: Not saying the ones you suggested aren't beautiful as I am not sure which specific ones to look up, just, not quite the type of group we're looking for? I'm not sure how to describe it :( I sound like a butt. I'm sorry.

We are going to pick up that 72" tank soon :)

not sure real name of fish, but the red and blue tetras that my petsmart sales are literally a bout the size of a 50 cent piece and fash

Oo, forgot to write that we did pick up that tank. It's 72"x18"x23" which brings it to 129g according to a volume calculator that I trust. Of course it's less when you put in substrate and such.

So the main fish I was going with were rosy barbs..but they're more sub tropical, like the rose line sharks. I think giant danios are too?

Has anyone had arulius or filamentosus barbs?
