Schooling fish to go with JD in 55 gal

Silver dollars seem like they would get too big right? 5 6" fish along witha 8" JD might be too much for a 55gallon, no? I would love to have silver dollars and if they're slow growers it might work.

I would say go to a fish store watch some of the schooling fish and whichever ones catch your eye that are in your size range go for them...

You can generally expect them to get to about 5", but I think they would be fine in a 55, if water quality is maintained (which 25-30% weekly water changes should take care of).

I wish I could afford 5 $40 fish...

What about going cheap then? Larger tiger barbs, giant danios, rosy barbs, etc. The columbian tetras are pretty feisty and can put up with a JD and 5-7 of them aren't to expensive either.

I've had several jd's and the only tankmates they didnt eat are other cichlids and catfish.

$40? I've seen them sold for $15-20...
