I don't think tank size plays a huge role. It's my guessing that a hungry fish will find the smaller fish if hungry.. no matter the size of the tank. I think even Johnptc loses a fish or two now and then?
As for schooling fish. Only cichlids I can think of that might do it are Geo's? And then possibly some non-cichlids like silver dollars, etc.
